Trump sent a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre linking his desire to annex Greenland to his anger over not receiving a Nobel Peace Prize. The letter has sparked widespread calls for invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office, with critics from both parties calling it “unhinged,” “insane,” and evidence of mental instability.

The most disturbing section is this direct quote:
“Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.”
Why it’s so disturbing:
- Transactional peace – He’s literally saying he’ll only pursue peace if he gets awards for it
- Petty grievance as policy – Foreign policy driven by personal slights rather than national interest
- Implicit threat – “I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace” is essentially threatening military action because he didn’t win a prize
- Factually delusional – Norway doesn’t award the Nobel Peace Prize (the Norwegian Nobel Committee does, independently), and the claim of “stopping 8 Wars PLUS” is… creative accounting at best
- Bizarre justification – The letter concludes “The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland” – connecting a personal award snub to threatening a NATO ally’s territory
It reads like a petulant child threatening to take his ball and go home, except the “ball” is U.S. military force and the “home” is a potential conflict with our closest allies.
